Living and Working in Hawaii

Making Hawai‘i Your Home

Hawai‘i is a beautiful island chain, famous for its stunning landscapes featuring some of the world’s most pristine beaches, lush rainforests and majestic volcanoes. The “Aloha Spirit” is a key part of the Hawaiian culture that DLS embraces, with an emphasis on respect, kindness and a strong sense of community. Hawai‘i is a true melting pot of cultures, with tremendous influences from Native Hawaiian, Asian and Western traditions. This results in many rich multicultural experiences and diverse culinary offerings like poke, spam musubi and loco moco, which have made their way to the US mainland and beyond!

Hawai‘i also has a strong sports culture. Considered the birthplace of surfing and beach volleyball, Hawai‘i has produced many professional and Olympic athletes in both sports. Although there are no professional sports teams in the state, the University of Hawai‘i (UH) at Mānoa is a division 1 school that hosts some of the best teams from around the country in a variety of athletics and has been nationally ranked in many sports over the years. DLS is a proud corporate sponsor of UH athletics, “the Home Team”! The Professional Golfers of America (PGA) tour kicks off its season in Hawaii with events in Maui and O‘ahu. The Ironman Triathalon is another product of Hawai‘i’s sports tradition, starting in 1978 it is widely recognized as one of the hardest races in the world.

As amazing as Hawaii is, the cost of living is amongst the highest in the U.S., especially when it comes to housing, gas and groceries. Being a remote island state in the Pacific is a blessing for climate and culture but its’ remoteness comes with a price. Fortunately, many of the best things about Hawai‘i are free – abundant natural parks, hiking trails, marine sanctuaries, and beautiful native flora and wildlife such as sea turtles, humpback whales, and endangered birds like the Nēnē Goose, the official state bird.

Whether you were born and raised in Hawai‘i or moved here from abroad, anyone that lives here understands what a privilege it is and the respect that is needed to stay. DLS has been serving the people of Hawai‘i since 1985, bringing them the best laboratory services possible. We truly believe in our motto of “Great Science. Great People.” It is what the people of Hawai‘i need and deserve.
