Confirmation Testing

Enzyme immunoassay (EIA) drug screen test results, such as results reported in a Clinical Substance Abuse Panel (CSAP) or a Medical Urine Drug Screen or 810M, are screen only test results. “Positive” screen results may be due to other chemical cross reactions, and may not be indicative of substance abuse (e.g. amphetamine positive screen results may be caused by over the counter cold medications).

Gas Chromatography / Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) is the industry standard for drug detection specificity and accuracy. GC/MS may be ordered to identify or to quantitate drug levels (e.g. monitor THC levels).

The following GC/MS confirmations tests are available on a routine basis, Monday – Fridays; tests are not available STAT:

Substance Identification

Clinicians with patient requests to identify unknown pills, powder, drug paraphernalia residue, etc., can order Substance ID, Test Code 4332. Qualitative EIA, TLC and GC/MS test methods will be employed in attempt to identity the most common substances of abuse and pharmaceutical drugs.
